We were very lucky to have Dr. Brian Hickey of the St. Lawrence River Research Institute as the guest speaker for our 14th annual Pig Roast and dive event this past weekend. He enlightened and educated us on the state of “OUR” river as well as some of the marine life we encounter on our dives. Brian’s casual but factual presentation style made for an extremely captivating demonstration.
-we now have a better understanding of Mercury levels in our environment, marine species, and all wildlife
-we now have a better understanding of the invasive Goby fish and how it has now become part of the river’s ecosystem.
-we now have a better understanding that the Lamprey Eels don’t like to be classified as part of the Eel family and much prefer to be called simply a “Lamprey”
-we now have a better understanding of the “endangered” American Eel, which ironically can be found worldwide, and so far as we know will only breed in the Sargasso Sea. (a section of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North America, I had to look that up!)
In conclusion to Brian’s presentation, we all sensed the passion and enthusiasm on all topics he touched on. As we are all avid divers, let’s do our part and support the River Institutes on-going research by reporting any sightings of the American Eel.
Simply scanning this QR code and filling out a 1 minute survey may help preserve this endangered species. Laminated hard copies of this code are available at 02toGo Dive shop, keep it with your dive gear or tape it to your dive bag/box and report it as soon you’re out of the water,
Thanks again for attending, it was a great dive event
